Review #23 – High West Double Rye

Review #23 – High West Double Rye

Review #: 23
Description: High West Double Rye Whiskey
Spirit: Rye

Background: High West, based out in Utah, has come on to the scene mostly due to their excellent sourcing of MPG rye whiskey. Their Double Rye, per their website, is a blend of their own distillate and MPG rye ranging from 2 to 7 years old. The “double” refers to the two different ryes blended as well as trying to be twice as bold and spicy as a normal rye. Let’s see how it tastes

Distillery – High West/MGP

Bottler – High West

Brand – High West

Selection – N/A

ABV – 46%

Age – NAS

Nose – Baking spices, anise, little bit of cinnamon transfers into peppermint and then rye bread
Taste – Starts off citrusy, the mint, black pepper, and rye spice
Finish – Rye continues from the taste, builds to black pepper, a slow burning warmth with allspice

Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? Yes

Thoughts: My first real introduction to rye and I think it sets a good bar. I love the spice and baking notes (disclaimer: I am a sucker for making and eating rye bread) and they punch through well. Around the $35 price point, I think it does well, especially if you are looking for the flavor punch that some barely legal ryes fail to deliver. It also makes a killer old-fashioned.
