Review #176 – Sazerac Rye

Review #176 – Sazerac Rye

Review #: 176
Description: Sazerac Rye
Spirit: Rye

Background: The parent company to Buffalo Trace, Sazerac is a family own company based in New Orleans. The Sazerac is a pretty big staple of whiskey cocktails so it is no surprise that they named their rye offering after it and their own name. It does not have an age statement though has always been rumored to be around 6 years old.

Distillery – Buffalo Trace

Bottler – Buffalo Trace

Brand – Sazerac

Selection – N/A

ABV – 45%

Age – NAS

Nose – Light rye, caraway seeds, tart raspberry jam, vanilla
Taste – Very fruity: cherry, apple, strawberry.  Cinnamon, allspice, caramel
Finish – Lots of spices with clove being the most dominant.  Some cigarette tobacco as well

Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? Yes, if available and I need a crowd pleaser rye

Thoughts: This has what a lot of people want in a barely legal rye.  Lots of fruit and sweetness with just enough rye influence to keep it interesting.  Nothing super amazing but plenty decent.  If you are huge into rye and want more of that flavor, this won’t do it for you, but if you are coming from bourbon, this is a nice transition.
