Review #198 – Mellow Corn Bottled-In-Bond

Review #198 – Mellow Corn Bottled-In-Bond

Review #: 197
Description: Mellow Corn Bottled-In-Bond
Spirit: Corn Whiskey

Background: Another BiB whiskey in the Heaven Hill portfolio, but this time it isn’t bourbon.  Over 80% corn in the mashbill and aged in used barrels, MC has gained fame as a champion of the bottom shelf, even if it’s weighted heavily for it’s meme potential.  Let’s see how it actually tastes though.

Distillery – Heaven Hill

Bottler – Heaven Hill

Brand – Mellow Corn

Selection – N/A

ABV – 50%

Age – NAS

Nose – Cinnamon cornbread, salted caramel, wonderbread, light fruit in the background
Taste – Sweet corn, light vanilla, cinnamon sugar, butter
Finish – Roasted and buttered corn, cinnamon cornbread, toasted almonds, heat flares up and lingers.

Score: 4
Would I buy a bottle? It’s fine for $12, but I probably won’t be rushing to replace it when it’s done.

Thoughts: Really, there is nothing surprising here.  It’s light, sweet, inoffensive, and the corn is unmistakable.  I definitely got more butter and sandwich bread than a typical bourbon, so that was at least interesting, but I’m not going to be reaching for it.  It’s so cheap, you won’t regret having it even if you forget you have it.
