Review #62 – Laphroaig PX Cask

Review #62 – Laphroaig PX Cask

Review #: 62
Description: Laphroaig PX Cask
Spirit: Scotch

Background: Laphroaig PX cask is a single malt from the Islay producer that is matured first in ex-bourbon barrels, then quarter-casks, before finished in Pedro Ximenez casks. Sounds similar to the Peat’s Beast I reviewed, so I have high hopes. This is a travel retail exclusive that is non-chillfiltered and no color added.

Distillery – Laphroaig

Bottler – Laphroaig

Brand – Laphroaig

Selection – N/A

ABV – 48%

Age – NAS

Nose – Iodine, smoke, dark cherries, frosted flakes, honey
Taste – Some vanilla, slight mango fruitiness, honey nut cheerios, rotting seaweed, some sulfur notes
Finish – Black pepper leads to brine and rotting seaweed.  Very vegetal and briny.

Score: 3
Would I buy a bottle? No

Thoughts: I was real excited to try this one and initially the nose and first taste reached that excitement. Then it took a nose dive into concrete as sulfur and salt water dominated my palate. If you went to the beach, picked up some of the rotted seaweed on the sand, and shoved it in your mouth, then you would know my experience. I see lots of reviews that say it tastes like cough syrup, but I wish it had tasted like that for me. I did come back to my sample a few days later, and while slightly better, a 3 is definitely representative of my thoughts.
