Review #64 – Mhoba Strand 101

Review #64 – Mhoba Strand 101

Review #: 64
Description: Mhoba Strand 101
Spirit: Rum

Background: Mhoba is a distillery in South Africa producing sugar cane juice rum. The Strand 101 is a blend of their unaged, pot still, high ester rum and their aged Select Reserve Glass Cask. Mhoba is a relatively new distillery, first producing in 2013 but they are getting a name for themselves and hopefully will have distribution in the US soon. Let us taste this sample though.

Distillery – Mhoba
Bottler – Mhoba

Brand – Mhoba

Selection – N/A

ABV – 58%

Age – NAS

Nose – Lots of funk, papaya, mango, some bathroom cleaner in the back as well
Taste – Lighter tropical fruits: pineapple, banana, cream cheese frosting
Finish – More funk, caramelized banana, creme brulee, cinnamon

Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? Yes (though probably not until it’s available in the US)

Thoughts: This was highly enjoyable, with lots of the unaged funk coming in but great fruity sweetness coming from the aged aspect of the blend. For around $50 a bottle, it’s not going to melt your face off like DOK, but it’s certainly more approachable and enjoyable on its own or in a cocktail. I’m looking to trying more Mhoba and having expanded availability.
