Review #83 – Elijah Craig Rye

Review #83 – Elijah Craig Rye

Review #: 83
Description: Elijah Craig Straight Rye Whiskey
Spirit: Rye

Background: Elijah Craig is an established brand from Heaven Hill, but recently they have released a branch into the rye world. At 51% rye, it probably won’t hit super hard with the rye flavor, but it maintains the EC Small Batch price point at around $30 a bottle, so let’s see if it’s worth it.

Distillery – Heaven Hill

Bottler – Heaven Hill

Brand – Elijah Craig

Selection – N/A

ABV – 47%

Age – NAS

Nose – Clove, spearmint, musty barn, juniper, dill, lemon rind
Taste – Caramel, sweet corn, pretty thin
Finish – More corn, leather and oak, rye spice comes in at the back of the throat

Score: 4
Would I buy a bottle? Probably not

Thoughts: Man, the nose on this was interesting and offered a whole lot of promise and then the taste just fell very flat.  It shows it’s a young, barely legal rye that was just ok.  In a vacuum, for the price it’s not bad.  But in reality, I’d probably prefer baby saz but definitely for cheaper and more flavor I’d get Old Forester rye.
