Review #112 – Penderyn 12 Year Port Wood Single Cask

Review #112 – Penderyn 12 Year Port Wood Single Cask

Review #: 112
Description: Penderyn 12 Year Port Wood Single Cask
Spirit: Welsh Whiskey

Background: Today’s review comes from the Penderyn Distillery in Wales. While Scotland claims most of the fame for Whisky coming from Great Britain, Wales and England are having more and more distilleries pop up. This was a single cask aged for 12 years in port wood. This was provided by a friend but was sampled completely blind with my notes submitted to him before revealing the contents.

Distillery – Penderyn

Bottler – Penderyn

Brand – Penderyn

Selection – N/A

ABV – 60.4%

Age – 12 Years

Nose – Tropical fruit, sweet but musty malt, almond extract, ethanol is apparent
Taste – Maple syrup, very rich cocoa, cinnamon, heavily toasted tree nuts
Finish – Dry nuttiness and baking spices that linger for a long time

Guess: Sherry cask scotch, 62-65%ABV, 12-15 Years?

Score: 9
Would I buy a bottle? Yes

Thoughts: Wow, this was really doing it for me.  Very rich, sweet and nutty.  Just really loved it and the taste lingered long.  This apparently has been a bit polarizing, but I definitely lean to liking sweet stuff so not super surprising for me.  I’d be willing to try more of their single cask offerings to see if this is the direction they are heading or whether this was an outlier.
