Review #: 140
Description: Real Minero 2015 Pechuga
Spirit: Mezcal
Background: Real Minero 2015 Pechuga, made by the late Don Lorenzo Angeles Mendoza, who died in 2016, in Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca, a celebrated clay-pot-distillation town not far from Oaxaca City. Lorenzo was the father of current Real Minero proprietors Graciela Angeles Carreño and Edgar Angeles Carreño (the current head distiller), as well as their brother Eduardo “Lalo” Angeles Carreño, who makes mezcal for his own brand, Lalocura. Made with ten-year-old Espadin (Agave angustifolia), fermented in wood, distilled in clay pots, with a third distillation with poultry (turkey, I believe, but it could be chicken) as well as assorted fruits and spices. 619 liters, bottle 269 of 785, batch RMP-02, 2015 harvest, 51.9% alcohol.

Would I buy a bottle? Yes
Thoughts: I first tasted this without knowing what it was. The nose and finish could almost have made me think this was some sort of agricole rum. Then on the palate I would have believed you if you said it was new make for scotch. Sweet, creamy with some floral notes balanced in there. Definitely can get the nice mouthfeel from the “pechuga” process. Looking forward to trying more like this.
