Description: Weller Full Proof: Total Wine Texas Single Barrel #278
Spirit: Bourbon
Background: Weller comes from Buffalo Trace and their line of wheated bourbons. Full Proof meaning that it is bottled at the same ABV as when it was put into the barrel, this being 114. This single barrel was selected by Total Wine in Texas and provided blind, though labeled “Total Whine” so I had an idea it might be a TW selection. The contents were revealed after I submitted my notes.
Distillery – Buffalo Trace
Bottler – Buffalo Trace
Brand – Weller
Selection – Total Wine Texas
ABV – 57%
Age – NAS
Nose – Apricot, honeydew melon, cherry, grapefruit, nice oakiness, a little bit of minerality, gooey caramel, freshly baked bread
Taste – Caramel, tart lemon, cherry cordial, ethanol starts to hit the tongue, more melon and bread
Finish – A little bitter, tannins, chalky fruit, dries out the mouth a little
Guess: The thought might be a TW single barrel. The chalky vitamin though makes me immediately think Dickel. So Bourbon, Dickel, 8-10 Years, 50-55% ABV?
Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? No
Thoughts: The nose on this one was really fruity and changed just over the course of drinking a pour. The ethanol was a bit aggressive on the tongue and then a bit to dry and bitter on the finish. Not bad but not great.
