Review #180 – Privateer Queen’s Share

Review #180 – Privateer Queen’s Share

Review #: 180
Description: Privateer Queen’s Share
Spirit: Rum

Background: Another offering from one of the most well renowned American rum producers, Queen’s Share is supposed to be the best rum, reserved for royalty. This comes from barrel P320 which I believe to be new charred American oak and bottled at cask strength without any additives.

Distillery – Privateer

Bottler – Privateer

Brand – Privateer

Selection – N/A

ABV – 56.9%

Age – NAS

Nose – Cocoa, heavy sharpie smell, light floral, caramel, orange oil
Taste – Sweet and rich caramel, tobacco leaf, vanilla, maple (though the mouthfeel is not enough to call it syrup)
Finish – Big kick of dried fruit, especially craisins, lots of barrel spice, banana chips, burnt caramel

Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? No

Thoughts: I’m really enjoying the things and transparency that Privateer is doing, but this just lacked anything to make it super interesting.  The taste was nice, if a bit standard for a molasses rum in new oak, but the sharpie note on the nose was so dominant and then a little bitter on the finish that kind of canceled out the positives.  I’d rather pay a little bit more for a Distiller’s Drawer with some more interesting stats.
