Review #301 – Transcontinental Rum Line Panama 2011

Review #301 – Transcontinental Rum Line Panama 2011

Review #: 301
Description: TCRL Panama 2011
Spirit: Rum

Background: This is a Panamanian rum bottled by La Maison Du Whisky under their Transcontinental Rum Line brand.  Distilled in 2011 from molasses in a column still, it was aged for 7 years in Panama and another 2 years in Europe in an ex-bourbon barrel.

Distillery – Don Jose

Bottler – La Maison Du Whisky

Brand – Transcontinental Rum Line

Selection – N/A

ABV – 43%

Age – 9 Years

Nose – Brown sugar, heavy molasses, unripe fruits, earthy coconut, vanilla.  Seems like there is a light grassyness in there that compliments the strong molasses pretty well
Taste – Creamy, vanilla, brown sugar, sweet cinnamon, chocolatey oak gets in there nicely.  Mouthfeel is light to medium.
Finish – Cinnamon turns a bit spicier with a prickle of heat and oak.  Very short and simple though.

Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? Yes, it’s a good rum to get non-drinkers interested without being additive laden like many common options

Thoughts: I actually was surprised with how much I like this.  This style and proof point can get a bit boring, and while it wasn’t super complex, it was well done and good for mindless sipping or cocktails.  The age brought in enough oak influence but the proof point just really holds it back.
