Review #303 – Transcontinental Rum Line Fiji 2014

Review #: 303
Description: TCRL Fiji 2014
Spirit: Rum

Background: Another LMDW rum offering, this one was distilled in Fiji in 2014 from molasses.  It is a blend of 3 ex-rum casks that were aged for 2 years in Fiji and then another 3 years in Europe.  Let’s see how it stacks up especially against XXX/4 also being from Fiji.

Distillery – South Pacific

Bottler – La Maison Du Whisky

Brand – Transcontinental Rum Line

Selection – N/A

ABV – 56.9%

Age – 5 Years

Nose – Sharp, diesel-y and rubbery, cooked sweet potato, unripe banana, smokey burnt sugar

Taste – Sweet vanilla, a little bit of caramel and white sugar.  It’s not overly sweet but there isn’t a whole ton of depth.  Maybe some unripe fruit.  Remind me of eating a cake that isn’t very sweet.  More texture than anything
Finish – Lots of burnt sugar and char, used matchstick, lingers with pepper and char.  A bit of fruit but like it was cooked over a tire fire

Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? No

Thoughts: This had a lot more industrial notes than the other Fijian rums I’ve had.  The taste was a little lacking but the finish at least kept it interesting, though not something I typically find myself reaching for.
