Description: Bacardi Gold
Spirit: Rum
Background: Standard, off the shelf Bacardi Gold. Cheap, no age statement, 40% and made in Puerto Rico, the Bacardi name is known well around the world but it actually was Cuban before moving to PR. The label champions it as a Cuba Libre is the cocktail of freedom. Likely dosed, let’s see how it is.
Distillery – Bacardi
Bottler – Bacardi
Brand – Bacardi
Selection – N/A
ABV – 40%
Age – NAS
Nose – Very standard spanish style with sweet molasses, brown sugar, caramel, there’s a bit of antiseptic and medical latex gloves though too that are off-putting
Taste – Very thin, light sweetness but less than I was expecting, burnt caramel, overbrewed black tea, plastic
Finish – Heat is short but a long lingering taste of melted plastic, cough syrup, iodine
Score: 2
Would I buy a bottle? No
Thoughts: I know this is marketed towards, and probably 95% of it is used in cocktails/mixed with coke, but it’s hard for me to even think sugary soda could cover up the negatives of this. I get the point of it in the market, but it is available products like these that give so many a false idea that this is what rum tastes like and nothing else, when there is such a diverse world of flavors out there for the same spirit.
