Review #365 – MAUI Dark Rum

Review #365 – MAUI Dark Rum

Review #: 365
Description: Maui Dark Rum
Spirit: Rum

Background: A review I’ve put off for a while, this rum was picked up several years ago when I was in Hawaii for work.  I’ve previously reviewed two other of their products and it was apparent why Haleakala Distillers are no longer in business.  No idea on aging or source, though definitely molasses and there’s a cool sticker that it was a gold medal winner at the 2009 Cane Spirits Festival…

Distillery – Haleakala Distillers

Bottler – Haleakala Distillers

Brand – MAUI

Selection – N/A

ABV – 40%

Age – NAS

Nose – Burnt caramel, raisin, I swear you can smell coloring, charcoal
Taste – Vague sweetness, caramel, raisinets, burnt coffee, watery
Finish – Dark chocolate, coffee, raisins, a surprising amount of heat (at least for 40%)

Score: 3
Would I buy a bottle? No

Thoughts: Honestly, I was expecting worse.  The raisin/coffee was very distinct and at least palatable, but nothing else really interesting or enticing.  This will continue to be regulated for color/floats in cocktails, which it is perfectly fine for.
