Review #366 – TOPO Organic Spiced Rum

Review #366 – TOPO Organic Spiced Rum

Review #: 366
Description: TOPO Organic Spiced Rum
Spirit: Rum

Background: This is a flavored, spiced rum from the North Carolina Distillery TOPO (Top Of The Hill).  I was able to tour the facility a few years ago and picked this up.  They make a whole bunch of products, and while I’ll say the tour was interesting at the time, I don’t have high expectations coming back to their spirit.  This says it was made from (organic!!) molasses and cane juice and botanicals of allspice, vanilla, orange peel, peppercorns, cinnamon, and clove.

Distillery – TOPO

Bottler – TOPO

Brand – TOPO

Selection – N/A

ABV – 40%

Age – NAS

Nose – Certainly used those botanicals.  Smells like an old fashioned heavy on the orange bitters.  Maybe some vague surgery sweetness.
Taste – Like a very watered down old fashioned.  Mild sweetness, empty vanilla, orange oil, clove
Finish – Pretty empty.  Clove, nutmeg, and orange are kind of there but also water and dull ethanol

Score: 3
Would I buy a bottle? No

Thoughts: Honestly, if they had added some sugar syrup or something to give this some texture, you could at least say it’s practically a bottled cocktail.  But it is just so watery that it feels empty and not very redeeming.  It’s somewhat consumable, but not really good…
