Review #: 415
Description: Cutty Sark (1966 Bottling)
Spirit: Scotch
Background: Still stemming from Berry Bros. & Rudd, this scotch was bottled in 1966. I imagine their might be a different source of distilleries but I do know that this does have a 6 point bump in proof. This bottle was picked up at auction for about $60 all in. I will note that the cork broke when trying to open, and trying to remove it broke apart. I don’t believe it broke until I attempted to remove it, and I immediately decanted and filtered it, but just keep that in mind.
Distillery – Various
Bottler – Berry Bros & Rudd
Brand – Cutty Sark
Selection – N/A
ABV – 43%
Age – NAS
Nose – Woah, hugely different from the modern bottling, tons of fruit, chocolate pudding, vanilla, strong honeydew melon, honeyed tea, sweet malt
Taste – Milk chocolate, honey, sweet malt, slight bitterness,
Finish – Very dark chocolate, sweet melon, freshly baked sourdough bread, light lemon, slightly ashy, bitterness lingers a bit strong
Score: 4
Would I buy a bottle? No
Thoughts: It’s a fun taste into the past and really interesting to taste the difference between it and the modern bottle back to back as they are wildly different. The nose is really incredible, but the rest of the experience is a bit aggressive and harsh. Despite the same score, I think the modern one was a bit more of a pleasant experience.
