Description: Longrow 2007 Sauternes
Spirit: Scotch
Background: This is a single cask of peated scotch from Springbank in their Longrow line. Distilled in November of 2007 and aged in First Fill Sauternes hogshead before bottling in August of 2019 exclusively for Pacific Edge W&S. Peat? Check. Wine? Check. Springbank? Check. Sign me up.
Distillery – Springbank
Bottler – Springbank
Brand – Longrow
Selection – N/A
ABV – 56.6%
Age – 11 Years
Nose – Lots of lime zest, charcoal, fresh strawberries, discarded orange skins, cucumber, incense, there’s a bit of something savory in the background. Best I can describe is like a lime citrus marinated pork chop on the grill. Peak becomes more apparent with airtime but it’s not an Islay bruiser.
Taste – Key lime pie with sweet meringue, vanilla and cinnamon buttercream. Bright and sweet but also contained with nice toasted malt and bbq sauce.
Finish – Big blast of cola, candied ginger, lemon zest, sweet embers, salty bacon
Score: 8
Would I buy a bottle? Not sure about price, but if it was around $150, then yes
Thoughts: This is such a different experience from the normal peat I expect and especially from the Springbank. So intense with the lime citrus and the peat very much stays in the background, yet works well to tie the savory and sweet together. Really, really enjoyable and a big thumbs up from me.
