Review #: 435
Description: Review #434 – Redacted Bros Islay Single Malt 1990
Spirit: Scotch
Background: Following up from the 1991 vintage, the 1990 is pretty much the same but with an added year to round up the age statement to an even 30 years. Still an Islay single malt, still a bourbon hogshead, and still bottled by Thompson Bros for K&L. Let’s see if the year makes much of a difference. Interestingly, it shares the same price of $300.
Distillery – Undisclosed
Bottler – Thompson Bros
Brand – Redacted Bros
Selection – K&L Wines
ABV – 50.2%
Age – 30 Years
Nose – A bit rich and sweeter than the 29, more honey, lemon curd, vanilla cream, little bit of black pepper, smoky barbeque sauce. Peat therefore takes a further backseat. The casks seems a bit more influential in this one
Taste – Really rich; buttercream, raspberry sauce, caramel drizzle, some watermelon gets in there (I swear), oak is there but comes in as creamy chocolate
Finish – Rich chocolate and oak, slight bitterness as the peat starts to poke in but it is nice and subtle and slow
Score: 8
Would I buy a bottle? Yes
Thoughts: Always enjoy tasting something that on paper is so similar yet in reality does establish itself as being different. I just really enjoy how much richer this comes across the palate and a bit of different fruit comes in. Neither are bad, but this is the one I would put my money down for.
