Review #438 – Blanton’s Silver Edition (2002)

Review #: 438
Description: Blanton’s Silver Edition (2002)
Spirit: Bourbon

Background: Blanton’s Silver, I believe, was a travel retail exclusive bottling meant for duty free shops.  Still single barrel, still no-age-statement, but a little bump up to 49%.  I don’t believe this is offered anymore as this was dumped on July 22nd, 2002.  Let’s see how it tastes.

Distillery – Buffalo Trace

Bottler – Buffalo Trace

Brand – Blanton’s

Selection – N/A

ABV – 49%

Age – NAS

Nose – Almost rye like with some savory herbs, basil, lavender, milk caramel.  Makes me think of the smell of picking berries.  Not overly fruity but some of that nice floral, earthy smell to it
Taste – Lightly sweet, eucalyptus, caramel, ginger, a touch tannic
Finish – More spices come in, basil, thyme, hard gingerbread, leaves the tongue and throat dry

Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? No

Thoughts: This was definitely more interesting than the green or standard dusty samples.  Way more savory and herbal in a way that takes away the sweetness you might expect.  If I had this blind, I probably would have guessed this to be a rye.  Enjoyable but not mind blowing.  It’s crazy to see this listed online for thousands of dollars.
