Description: Old Grand-Dad (2002)
Spirit: Bourbon
Background: A bit of an older bottling of Old Granddad, but still while it was under Beam’s portfolio (as it is now). This was bottled in 2002 so still before the boom, but this was still cheap whiskey at the time.
Distillery – Jim Beam
Bottler – Jim Beam
Brand – Old Grand Dad
Selection – N/A
ABV – 43%
Age – NAS
Nose – Almost a caramelized banana (but not super fruity), really nice oak, green melon, milk caramel, air time brings almost a pine-y aspect that compliments the wood well
Taste – Very creamy and sweet, silky vanilla, milk caramel, sweet melon, dark chocolate, whipped cream, raspberry sauce
Finish – A touch bitter with the oak but not bad, black pepper, burnt caramel, dark chocolate. Finish is just a little short
Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? Probably not at today’s prices because I’m sure it has a premium, but it’s pretty tasty.
Thoughts: This is really nice for what is supposed to be a lower shelf bottle. This strikes me as a perfect camping whiskey. A decent amount of oak and sweetness, but it’s not overly heavy and easy to drink. I want to have this while sitting next to a fire.
