Review #: 482
Description: Sugarfield Experimental Batch 006
Spirit: Rum
Background: Following up batch 5, batch 6 from the Louisiana distillery uses the same yeast and distillation process, but now uses cane juice from the “Assumption” parish. So now we should be able to see if the terroir has an impact.
Distillery – Sugarfield
Bottler – Sugarfield
Brand – Sugarfield
Selection – N/A
ABV – 46%
Age – Unaged
Nose – More of the roasted quality comes through with coffee and chocolate, cooked banana, mud, water plants, kiwi, buttered popcorn
Taste – Sweeter and more caramel, sweet tea, red apple, kiwi, coffee with cream
Finish – Turns a bit bitter but not as much as batch 5, coffee beans, burnt caramel, burnt grass, menthol
Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? Not sure on price, but if it was reasonable (sub $50) I probably would if I visited the distillery
Thoughts: Well, definitely a difference with this varietal. The richness from the nose is stronger and then carries over more into the flavor. While it does get bitter towards the end, it’s more nuanced and doesn’t have the metallic bit that turned me off from the previous batch. Really cool to try them back to back though.
