Review #: 494
Description: Lost Lantern Boulder Spirits Single Malt: r/Bourbon
Spirit: American Single Malt
Background: Picked alongside the Westward, this Lost Lantern bottling comes from Boulder Spirits in Colorado. It is made using 100% unpeated malted barley and aged entirely in a Char #3 New Oak barrel from Kelvin Cooperage, it comes in at a whopping 70.9% ABV. If I’m not mistaken, I think this is the first hazmat Whiskey that I have reviewed.
Distillery – Boulder Spirits
Bottler – Lost Lantern
Brand – Lost Lantern
Selection – r/Bourbon
ABV – 70.9%
Age – 5 Years
Nose – Definitely the most bourbon-y of these three ASM (which is to be expected with the exclusive new oak aging), cherry, dark chocolate, charred oak very apparent, vanilla custard, buttered popcorn, marshmallow
Taste – Milk chocolate, maple syrup, baked apple slices, maraschino cherry
Finish – Absolutely nowhere near 70%, even if you don’t get it right it drinks like 60%, spice really starts to come through with ginger, baked apple, melted vanilla ice cream
Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? No
Thoughts: Firstly I have to say that I can’t really pull negatives from this and it drinks so much lower in proof. That said, it’s a bit too much like bourbon. It doesn’t really lay down that malty flavor and texture I would want to see. It’s tasty, but I could get a similar experience from a bourbon and less cost. That’s the biggest draw back of this whiskey. It is solid but you can get solid for cheaper. I’d still keep my eyes on them as a producer.
