Review #: 500
Description: Golden Devil 1994 New Yarmouth Estate
Spirit: Rum
Background:
This is a single cask of Jamaican rum. Coming from the New Yarmouth Estate (who make Wray and Nephew) and bottled by Hunter Laing’s rum brand Kill Devil. It was distilled in 1994 and spent time aging both tropically and in Europe, it was bottled after 26 years at cask strength.
My 500th review posted on my site and the 100th rum, this is a pretty cool milestone and something I thought would be pretty far out of reach when I started. I have tons more to go through and now see 1000 as a very real and exciting milestone. Let’s see if this rum can be worthy of the landmark.
Distillery – New Yarmouth Estate
Bottler – Hunter Laing
Brand – Kill Devil
Selection – N/A
ABV – 66.3%
Age – 26 Years
Nose – Almond Joy! Chocolate, coconut, maple syrup, cinnamon, sweet cherry, oak is strong and provides a nice backbone compared to all the sweetness
Taste – Really thick mouthfeel, maple syrup, snickerdoodle, dark chocolate
Finish – Chocolate mint, toasted coconut, gingersnap cookie, green apple, a touch of tannins and a little of that funk remind you it’s Jamaican, but the age has really mellowed it out
Score: 8
Would I buy a bottle? At $250, I say yes
Thoughts: Big and bold, this is what I really look for in a older rum, especially from Jamaica. I’ve had some high aged ones that get really industrial and plastic-y, but this is super well integrated and helps balance the sweetness. I think the proof is a little on the high end. If it was under 60%, I think it would boost it up a little, but that’s just me trying to find something to complain about.
