Description: Traverse City Barrel Proof Rye Whiskey: r/Bourbon SiB
Spirit: Rye
Background: 30 for 30: Day 5. Moving on to some rye, MGP is known for their 95/5 mashbill (95% rye, 5% malted barley). I believe most if not all of this series’ rye will be 95/5. MGP has been known for these barrels as they have worked extremely well with older age statements and deliver that punch for people that the barely legal ryes on the market just don’t fit the bill. This one is bottled by Traverse City in Michigan. Distilled in January 2014 and bottled in November of 2021, it was aged in Kelvin Cooperage barrels.
Distillery – MGP

Brand – Traverse City Whiskey Co
Selection – r/Bourbon
ABV – 59.2%
Age – 7 Years
Nose – Maple, toffee, gingerbread, damp forest, coffee beans, cola, some dark fruit like plum and then a hint of citrus. Almost lemon-y
Taste – Sweet apple, rich coffee, maple, toasted rye bread, it’s a balanced sweetness thats hard to articulate fully but is very delicious, touch of dill
Finish – Good hit of herbal spice and earthy rye, peppery with a nice amount of warmth and a touch of that citrus does well to balance it
Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? Yes
Thoughts: This is just one solid bottle of rye. Lots of great notes on the nose, contained sweetness and great rye influence. My only thing is that it is so solid and so in its lane, that it doesn’t excel in one area to lift it to greatness. But a great bottle to have.
