Description: Dancing Goat Limousin Rye: r/Bourbon #8300 “Orange Bitters”
Spirit: Rye
Background: 30 for 30 Day 14: How do you follow up a cherry barrel? With an orange barrel, obviously. Much like the last one, this uses MGP rye and finished in an orange bitter barrel. Not sure the original maturation or finish time on this one, but the total combined for 6 years and 364 days. As before, it is 95/5.
Distillery – MGP
Bottler – Dancing Goat
Brand – Dancing Goat
Selection – r/Bourbon
ABV – 56.1%
Age – 6 Years
Nose – Orange oil, fresh basil, almond cream, yellow cake, black tea, honey
Taste – Orange creamsicle, lavender and honey, much like the cherry it’s a lot of pastry/bakery notes of cake and frosting with vanilla and orange.
Finish – Like the cherry the orange gets a touch bitter but not as aggressive, the rye character really does start to come through with nice spice and savory herbs, black tea
Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? Absolutely
Thoughts: This is the old fashioned to the cherry manhattan. What I like more here though is the heat is toned down on the finish which also the rye characteristic to come through. Just a bit more balanced and therefore nuanced because of it. More approachable and easier to reach for when wanting just a pour and not a cocktail.
