Review #525 – Lorely

Review #525 – Lorely

Review #: 525
Description: Lorely
Spirit: Bourbon

Background: 30 for 30: Day 19.  Coming from the Maryland Heritage Series which takes MGP barrels to Maryland to finish aging and bottling, Lorely was aged for 16 years and uses the 75/21/4 corn/rye/barley mashbill. Like the Remus, this has a high age and comes in under 50%.

Distillery – MGP

Bottler – Henry M. Wright & Co

Brand – Lorely

Selection – N/A

ABV – 48.9%

Age – 16 Years

Nose – Very bright with fruit, red apple, maraschino cherry, chocolate, nougat, Dr. Pepper, some dry oak..  Smells like a well refined dessert.
Taste – Sweet cherry, strawberry, light vanilla, cola, oak really pulls the sweetness of the fruit back and keeps it balanced
Finish – Peak of corn comes in with oak, lots of spice, baking chocolate, menthol tobacco (just a hint).  Compared to the Gatsby, it has much more spice to it than bitterness

Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? No

Thoughts: Definitely a better balance with the barrel on this compared to Remus, but I’m still disappointed.  The biggest thing I’ve noticed, with both, is the viscosity.  I love a good, thick feel that coats your mouth and adds to the experience.  Both felt thin.  I know they are lower proof but they are still cask strength and you would hope not to lose that.  This had some bright fruit despite 16 years but ended up tasting enjoyable but not memorable.
