Description: Paddy Irish Whiskey (Bottled 1977)
Spirit: Irish Whiskey
Background: Part of the Irish Distiller’s portfolio and distilled at the Midleton Distillery. This particular whiskey was bottled in 1977 which a friend graciously shared with me. Nowadays, Paddy Irish Whiskey is still around but the brand is owned by Sazerac. Let’s take a dip in to the past
Distillery – Midleton
Bottler – Midleton
Brand – Paddy
Selection – N/A
ABV – 40%
Age – NAS
Nose – Sourdough, butterscotch candy, musty pipe tobacco, almost a light wintergreen/menthol freshness
Taste – Butterscotch, vanilla, mild caramel, some gingersnap cookie, licorice. Despite the notes, it’s really not that sweet. Kind of muted and one-dimensional
Finish – A bit of ginger, menthol, black tea, licorice, touch of oak. Otherwise, short and fleeting.
Score: 4
Would I buy a bottle? No, especially since obviously auction is the only way
Thoughts: This was super interesting to try and I am very thankful for the chance. The nose was really interesting and not like any of the current, standard offering Irish blends I could think of. Ultimately, it seems like even in the 70s, available irish whiskies were a bit watery and one dimensional.
