Review #181 – Kirkland 22 Year Speyside

Review #181 – Kirkland 22 Year Speyside

Review #: 181
Description: Kirkland 22 Year Speyside
Spirit: Scotch

Background: Kirkland is Costco’s house brand that extends from toilet paper to spirits. Bottled by Alexander Murray & Co., it boasts a 22 year age statement where it was aged in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in Oloroso sherry casks. Sticking with the Costco theme, it retails for about $80 making it pretty cheap for such a hefty age. So let’s see if it is worth it.

Distillery – Undisclosed

Bottler – Alexander Murray & Co.

Brand – Kirkland

Selection – N/A

ABV – 46%

Age – 22 Years

Nose – Raisins, dates, plum, maple syrup, fig, soy sauce, sweet bread, apple pie
Taste – Rich but light, toasted bread, light nuts and dried fruits
Finish – Tannic in the back of the throat, tart grapes and green apple, lots of barrel spice.  Finish is pretty warm and dry

Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? No

Thoughts: I was interested to try this one especially since it can pop up at costco for a pretty low price.  I honestly think it’s a fair value for a 22 year old Scotch.  The nose is incredible, the taste is very delicate for how rich the nose is, but it’s the finish being a bit too dry and tannic for my taste.  If you are into that profile, this would be a solid pickup.
