Description: Rolling Fork Small Batch Rum
Spirit: Rum
Background: Rolling Fork is an American Independent Bottler that is starting to do some interesting things with Rum in the US. Their small batch is a standard product that consists of Jamaican rum distilled on a column still and aged 4 years tropically. Coming in around $30 and sitting at 50%, it doesn’t sound too bad. This sample was provided blind from a friend and revealed to me after submitting my notes.
Distillery – Undisclosed
Bottler – Rolling Fork
Brand – Rolling Fork
Selection – N/A
ABV – 50%
Age – 4 Years
Nose – Fresh cut grass, fresh mint, cold milk, stale bread
Taste – Slightly sour cream, burnt caramel, mineral, chalky texture
Finish – Spicy ginger, allspice, caramel, spearmint
Guess: Woah, this was interesting. The notes I picked up felt pretty distinct but it had a nice transition to a pleasant ending with sweetness and spice. I would guess that this is some sort of lightly aged, cane juice rum? Around 50-55%?
Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? No
Thoughts: Huh, not what I was expecting. There was no funk on this, and definitely more grassy notes than I would expect. Still, I don’t think it’s bad. It’s a tasty rum, but if I’m craving a Jamaican, there’s better to go for in this price range. It wouldn’t be too bad for a cocktail rum that has a bit different of a profile than what you would normally expect from a Jamaican rum.
