Review #: 222
Description: Duncan Taylor Caroni 1997
Spirit: Rum
Background: This is a Independent Bottling of Trinidadian rum distilled at Caroni in a pot still from molasses in December of 1997. It was bottled in February of 2014 without any color or chillfiltration. This is cask #87. This sample was provided blind from a friend and its contents were revealed after submitting my notes.
Distillery – Caroni
Bottler – Duncan Taylor
Brand – Duncan Taylor
Selection – N/A
ABV – 55.1%
Age – 16 Years
Nose – Pineapple, overripe banana, hand sanitizer, robitussin cough syrup, menthol, caramel, vanilla. The longer it sits, the more harsh notes subside and gets a bit more “neutral”
Taste – Caramel, vanilla, apple, fruit from the nose does not translate to the taste, chocolate
Finish – Burnt caramel, burned rubber, lots of oak, creme brulee, roasted banana
Guess: Caroni 2000? Since someone else just got this blind from the same person
Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? No
Thoughts: This really wasn’t bad, even enjoyable, but nothing mind blowing. I will say the sting of the robitussin note I didn’t like but that might be some childhood PTSD. After some time out the nose did settle. The finish was a bit bitter but even the burnt caramel or rubber notes were that offensive. I liked this more than some of the older, aged, funk bombs I’ve tried.
