Review #250 – Grosperrin N°72 Grande Champagne Cognac: Aficionados x Fine Drams

Review #250 – Grosperrin N°72 Grande Champagne Cognac: Aficionados x Fine Drams

Review #: 250
Description: Grosperrin N°72 Grande Champagne Cognac: Aficionados x Fine Drams
Spirit: Cognac

Background: The second in the trio of Brandy releases from Aficionados, this cognac is designated Lot 72 so likely distilled in 1972 (though not certified).  Bottled in 2020, this carries a lot of age and again was selected over some hard hitting stats on other samples.  Again, bottled at cask strength without any additives and sold by FineDrams, this should be exciting to try. As of posting, it is still available for purchase.

Distillery – Grosperrin

Bottler – Grosperrin

Brand – Grosperrin

Selection – Aficionados x FineDrams

ABV – 56.1%

Age – 48 Years

Nose – Brighter than the armagnac, sweet apple, vanilla, almost a bit of mango?, plums.  Toasted oak helps round out the sweetness of the fruit.  Some waffle cone in there as well.
Taste – Grape jam, maple syrup, cooked apples, peaches, marshmallow, little bit of vanilla and caramel.
Finish – Big blast of barrel spices, cinnamon, clove, some maple syrup and caramel.  Tannins are there but not too drying.  Alcohol is apparent but everything remains in balance.

Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? Yes

Thoughts: This was quite different from the 96 bottle.  The fruit was a bit brighter and sweeter, and it lacked some of the rich butteriness the armagnac had.  Despite being significantly older, it did still balance the oak really nicely.  I was expecting a bit more dryness and to be more tannic, but it really was kept in check.  An excellent selection, as to be expected from Aficionados and FineDrams at this point.
