Review #: 335
Description: Rhum Clement Cask Strength Single Barrel #49
Spirit: Agricole
Background: Similar to the last review, this is another single cask from Clement Habitation selected by K&L wines. It was put into an ex-bourbon barrel on February 1st, 2015 and dumped on April 3rd, 2018 for 3 years of tropical aging. At the same proof, it will be interesting to see how 1 year less affects the spirit.
Distillery – Habitation Clement
Bottler – Habitation Clement
Brand – Clement
Selection – K&L Wines
ABV – 56.6%
Age – 3 Years
Nose – Surprisingly more roasty on the nose than the older cask, espresso, ginger bread, dry grass, damp soil, sourdough. This seems far less fruity than the other cask.
Taste – Maple, caramel, vanilla, a little bit of coffee, slight hint of banana. It’s not quite as sweet and has a touch more to it that I can’t put my finger on. I don’t know if it’s just different oak interaction with the spirit or it being younger and more of the distillate bringing the difference.
Finish – Oak and dry grass, more coffee, chocolate. Less tacky and spicy than cask 229 and more of a roasted quality to it.
Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? Yes. Again, around $40 and then on sale from there, it’s great quality rum and very approachable even as an agricole.
Thoughts: I’ll admit, trying two agricoles back-to-back, I really had a tough time trying to distinguish and identify what I was tasting. This one definitely had a more roasted and rich quality to it, where I thought the other cask was a bit more pronounced and distinguishable. I’d probably put this at a 6+ just to say I preferred it as the roastiness set itself apart slightly, but both are quality, interesting, and definitely great values.
