Description: Clairin Casimir “Ansyen” Cask CA17OL-1
Spirit: Rum
Background: This is a single barrel of Clairin selected by Kate Perry with La Maison & Velier. Distilled at Douglas Casimir Distillery in Baraderes, Haiti, the spirit was filled on November 30th, 2017 into an ex-Oloroso casks and aged for 29 months before bottling at 52.9%. Let’s see how this one tastes.
Distillery – Douglas Casimir
Bottler – La Maison Du Whisky
Brand – Clairin
Selection – N/A
ABV – 52.9%
Age – 2 Years
Nose – Slight rubber, plum, lemon pledge, raisin, apple. Lots of fruit but in a rich and syrupy way, though not sweet.
Taste – Brown sugar, cooked apple, cooked plum, dark cherry, sweet oak. Not overly sweet and much more rich (like the nose)
Finish – Oaky, fruit splashes in a bit more bright before some light industrial notes and spice come in.
Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? Probably
Thoughts: This was a lot more cohesive than the Vaval to me and far more enjoyable. Rich and balanced with enough fruit influence to really keep it interesting. I haven’t had the regular Casimir (which I probably should have gone through the standard range before these, but I was too tempted) so I can’t say for sure whether it’s the spirit or not, but I’m guessing the 10 months less in the cask helped too.
