Review #: 404
Description: Matusalem 10 Solera Clasico
Spirit: Rum
Background: This is a Dominican rum that claims an average of 10 years in the blend. Who knows the real age and unsure about additives (I would guess lightly sugared and colored). It is priced accordingly though so let’s see if it is worth it.
Distillery – Matusalem
Bottler – Matusalem
Brand – Matusalem
Selection – N/A
ABV – 40%
Age – NAS
Nose – Burnt sugar, toasted almonds, unripe banana, vanilla extract, there’s actually a nice oakiness in there as well, but even on the nose you can tell it’s a bit thin
Taste – A bit sweet with vanilla, oak, burnt tree nuts. Tastes a little watery
Finish – Bitterness increases just a tad, oak and burnt sugar linger but it’s not very intense.
Score: 3
Would I buy a bottle? No
Thoughts: I’ll give it points for actually having a pretty solid oak influence so I could believe the age being up there. But ultimately it falls a bit thin and simple. Even at $25 a bottle, there are better tasting and higher quality options available if you are looking for a good cocktail rum.
