Description: Montebello Brut De Fut Vieux
Spirit: Agricole
Background: This is a rhum from Guadeloupe. The cane juice rum spent 10 years in ex-bourbon barrels before bottling. Let’s get into it.
Distillery – Montebello
Bottler – Montebello
Brand – Montebello
Selection – N/A
ABV – 45.3%
Age – 10 Years
Nose – Initial pour hits with a lot of household cleaner and rubbing alcohol, but it opens up to a really nice rich, buttery brown sugar, vanilla ice cream, orange, cooked pineapple, burnt motor oil
Taste – Light grassy sweetness, vanilla, strong oak structure, not much fruit coming through from the nose.
Finish – Gets a bit dirty, ashy, diesel fumes, baking chocolate, burnt toast. Despite the harsh sound, it’s not overly bitter or aggressive and makes for an interesting finish
Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? No
Thoughts: I wish the taste had a bit more of the strong fruit that I got in on the nose. I think that it would have just opened up another layer of depth and brought it together more. I think the oak dominates a little too much. But it provides and fun experience nevertheless without being overly assertive on what you might expect from agricole notes
