Review #: 466
Description: The Ultimate Whisky Company Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2013 6 Year
Spirit: Scotch
Background: Just as the last review, this is an independent bottling of peated Bunnahabhain distillate. Distilled on September 11th, 2013, it was aged in a bourbon hogshead for 6 years until October 29th,, 2019. Still light on color and punchy on proof. This is cask 900106. How does 6 more months of aging change it?
Distillery – Bunnahabhain
Bottler – The Ultimate Whisky Company
Brand – The Ultimate Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Selection – N/A
ABV – 63.7%
Age – 6 Years
Nose – Still sweet and fruity; coconut, lemon candy, cinnamon bun, baking chocolate, kind of a light almondy/nutty smell, smoldering campfire
Taste – Still a nice mouthfeel with sweet cream, but more chocolate here, lemon meringue pie, cinnabon
Finish – Smoke is far more controlled, smoked chocolate, cinnamon spice, lemon pepper, roasted tree nuts, more diluted smoke than the 5 year but a bit drier
Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? At the time, still priced around 40 Euro which still makes it a steal
Thoughts: Really cool to taste the difference just a few months of aging can make. Really feel like there was a bit more chocolate and cinnamon, slightly less fruit and not nearly as punch in the throat with smoke with just 6 months more time in the barrel. The trade off was some of those more interesting notes that keep it on par with it score wise but definitely a different experience.
