Review #593 – New Riff Maltster: Bourbon With Malted Wheat

Review #: 593
Description: New Riff Maltster: Bourbon With Malted Wheat
Spirit: Bourbon

Background: This is another special release from New Riff that, as you could guess from the title, uses malted wheat in the mashbill.  It also uses 2 other types of wheat so a lot of change from New Riff’s normal bourbon going on.  It is comprised of 65% corn, 18% Bohemian malted wheat, 10% unmalted wheat, and 7% dark wheat.  It was aged for 5 years and Bottled-In-Bond

Distillery – New Riff

Bottler – New Riff

Brand – New Riff

Selection – N/A

ABV – 50%

Age – 5 Years

Nose – Freshly baked honey-wheat bread, bright cherry, cantaloupe, cinnamon cornbread
Taste –  Gooey caramel, light pineapple, sugar cookie, vanilla latte, honey bun pastry
Finish – Lots of oak and roasty goodness comes through and still a bit of that fruit with some charred pineapple sneaks in with the warmth

Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? Yes

Thoughts: Really enjoyable how all that wheat comes together.  Lot’s of toasted notes balanced by some surprisingly tropical fruit sweetness.  Now, it’s not super bold and dynamic with its complexity which holds it back slightly, but still quite tasty and enjoyable to drink overall.
