Review #: 160
Description: Teeling Single Cask 14 Year Chestnut Finish
Spirit: Irish Whiskey
Background: What better way to follow up my last review of an Irish whiskey finished in a chestnut wood cask with another! This is bottled by Teeling and therefore presumed to be distilled at Cooley with the bulk of the maturation taking place in bourbon barrels. Aged for a total of 14 years and bottled at 55.1% abv, let’s see how it stacks up.
Distillery – Cooley
Bottler – Teeling
Brand – Teeling
Selection – N/A
ABV – 55.1%
Age – 14 Years
Nose – Definitely that distinctive Irish pot still/single malt smell (kind of sourdough like), cocoa, stewed plums, nice woody oak, baked apples, little bit of cinnamon, honey wheat bread
Taste – Rich and sweet, apple pie, cinnamon, maple, brown sugar
Finish – Bran flakes, brown sugar, more apple pie, baking spices like clove/nutmeg/allspice linger long on the tongue
Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? Yes
Thoughts: Teeling continues to show what Irish whiskey can be with proof behind it. It’s unmistakably Irish, but the flavors are rich and intense and distinctive. Might be a touch on the sweet side (which might be due to the chestnut cask), but this is delicious.
