Review #263 – Dramfool 2011 PX Mystery Speyside

Review #263 – Dramfool 2011 PX Mystery Speyside

Review #: 263
Description: 2011 PX Mystery Speyside
Spirit: Scotch

Background: This whisky comes from an “Undisclosed, Mystery Speyside” aka Glenfarclas. It was distilled in 2011 and is (still) fully matured in a PX Sherry cask. This is still in cask and is to be bottled in the next year or two by Dramfool. This is a sister cask and near identical to the last review that was fully matured in Oloroso

Reviews 259 – 264 were done as part of the Dramfool Spirit of Speyside tasting. This took place on Zoom, headed by Dramfool co-founder, Colin Fraser. There were about 15 active participants on the Zoom call giving notes and impressions while we tasted and the contents were revealed after some tasting and discussion. Notes are therefore a little brief.

Distillery – Glenfarclas

Bottler – Dramfool

Brand – Dramfool

Selection – N/A

ABV – 62.5%

Age – 8 Years

Nose – Soy sauce/umami, bruleed bananas, pineapple, caramel, honey, red apple.  Little bit of earthiness in there and some light breadiness.  Almost like toast with honey and banana on it.
Taste – Tons of banana, vanilla, caramel.  A little bit of bitterness I can’t put my finger on keeps it balanced.
Finish – Banana, banana, banana.  Crazy the amount of banana this has.  Chocolate, nutmeg and all spice.  Heat is really nice and really like a fancy bananas foster dessert.

Score: 9
Would I buy a bottle? Absolutely

Thoughts: This was so crazy and different and interesting.  This is only a few months different from the Oloroso bottling but couldn’t be more different.  I don’t think I’ve ever had a scotch like this.  If you don’t like banana (it does leech into “Laffy Taffy” territory) than you might not like it as much, but this was killer to me.  Will definitely be keeping my eyes open for when they bottle this in a year or so.
