Review #317 – Habitation Velier Savanna HERR

Review #317 – Habitation Velier Savanna HERR

Review #: 317
Description: Habitation Velier Savanna HERR
Spirit: Rum

Background: This is a high ester, unaged rum from Savanna distillery on the French island of Reunion. This comes from a molasses distillate off of a pot still.  Rumor has it that they made a large batch of it before having it sit in tanks figuring out what to do before HV decided they wanted to bottle some of it.  As a funk junky, I’m excited.

Distillery – Savanna

Bottler – Habitation Velier

Brand – Habitation Velier

Selection – N/A

ABV – 61.1%

Age – Unaged

Nose – Oh my, super fruity: juicy fruit, watermelon, bubblegum, smarties candy, there’s a tiny bit of funk in the form of some staleness, like a weird overripe banana.  There is a slight sweaty locker room tinge in there too.
Taste – More sweet fruit, guava, pineapple, smarties, banana cream pie, vanilla frosting
Finish – Big blast of molasses, burnt caramel, cooked bananas.  If you have ever had a pixie stick and coated your mouth with sugar to the point where raw sugar goes down your throat and then you cough up a cloud of sugar, that’s the best way I can describe the way this leaves your mouth feeling.  But without the discomfort of the coughing.

Score: 9
Would I buy a bottle? I’m kicking myself for not getting a backup.  Around $60 and this is probably the best rum I’ve had to date.

Thoughts:  I think my thoughts are pretty clear here.  I love how much more approachable this is compared to DOK (which I love too).  Super fruity and sweet and tangy and just keeps your mouth on an endless amount of flavors.  It’s so good and I really hope to get hands on more of it.
