Description: Stellum Bourbon Black
Spirit: Bourbon
Background: Just like the Rye, Stellum Bourbon Black is said to be aged from older bourbon stocks from Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Foolishly, I have not reviewed nor even tried the standard bottling of Stellum Bourbon (I have at least quickly tried a single barrel), so unlike the rye, I can’t compare the two. It is priced like the rye at $100 MSRP, but I got this bottle at costco for $80. So still nearly twice the price of the standard bottling and close to the other offerings from Barrell. Let’s give it a taste.
Distillery – Various
Bottler – Barrell Craft Spirits
Brand – Stellum
Selection – N/A
ABV – 54.61%
Age – NAS
Nose – Lots of bright fruit, strawberry, pear, vanilla bean ice cream, toasted marshmallow, frosted flakes cereaOrange zest, peach rings, cracker jacks, musty oak, peanut, caramelly oak. Rich and complex
Taste – Praline, toffee, caramel latte, peach preserves, orange oil, sweet vanilla cream
Finish – Peach rings, roasted peanuts, espresso, butterscotch. The buttery, richness really lasts a long time with a touch of oak and sweetness sprinkled in. Really great.
Score: 8
Would I buy a bottle? Yes
Thoughts: While I can’t compare to the standard bottle, this is some really fantastic bourbon. The peach note is prominent and lovely, and then super buttery and velvety on the back end. While maybe some better marketing could separate it from the shelves of other bourbons out there, the taste really sets itself apart and makes it clear what this product is.
