Review #357 – Privateer Distiller’s Drawer #73 “Garrigue”

Review #: 357
Description: Privateer Distiller’s Drawer #73 “Garrigue”
Spirit: Rum

Background: This DD release is a 3 year rum in new American Oak.  “Garrigue” is a scent descriptor for wild shrubs and herbs on the Mediterranean Coast which Privateer feels is exemplified in this expression, so let’s see if it does.

Distillery – Privateer

Bottler – Privateer

Brand – Privateer

Selection – N/A

ABV – 56.9%

Age – 3 Years

Nose – Rich molasses, heavy vanilla, there is a light hint of some savory herbs in the back, like some basil and a touch of rosemary, lots of baking spices
Taste – Very thick and syrupy.  Cherry cordial, maple syrup, spiced nuts.  Oak really keeps it balanced but without being in your face.  Spices are strong but much more on the sharp/savory side rather than anything sweet, unripe banana
Finish – Continuing on with the heavy spices but not offensive, nice oak with the molasses sweetness.  Cooked banana, burnt sugar.  Doesn’t linger that long and definitely drinks under the proof

Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? Yes

Thoughts: A really nice rum.  Love the thick mouthfeel and once again Privateer shows the ability to work well with New Oak despite the challenges it represents.  Lots of spices but they are needed as otherwise this could be a bit heavy on the sweetness.  A decent level of depth to it just make this rum very solid and enjoyable.
