Review #451 – Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year

Review #451 – Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year

Review #: 451
Description: Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year
Spirit: Scotch

Background: A single malt from The Balvenie, the label seems to indicate that it is first matured in ex-bourbon casks before being finished in sherry casks.  This is commonly recommended for newer scotch drinkers.  Prices have crept up (as I believe I paid about $40) to around $60, so about in line given the age and the prominence.

Distillery – The Balvenie

Bottler – The Balvenie

Brand – The Balvenie

Selection – N/A

ABV – 43%

Age – 12 Years

Nose – Nice and malty, chocolate, lemon pound cake, fresh ginger, toasted sourdough bread, a light hint of jammy fruits
Taste – Light and sweet, vanilla cream, lemon custard, strawberry jelly, milk chocolate
Finish – Bran cereal, lemon is a bit more tart, black pepper.  Ultimately a bit short overall though.

Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? No.  But I don’t have a problem recommending it

Thoughts: I think this is a great way to get people into the world of malt.  That flavor is upfront and easy to identify, with nice compliments from the two different casks.  It’s approachable, easy to drink, and mildly interesting.
