Review #454 – Roger Groult Calvados Kriek Cask Finish

Review #454 – Roger Groult Calvados Kriek Cask Finish

Review #: 454
Description: Roger Groult Calvados Kriek Cask Finish
Spirit: Calvados

Background: This is a Calvados from Roger Groult that was aged for 5 years before spending another 2 in Kriek casks.  Kriek is a Belgian lambic beer made from sour Morello cherries.  I believe the Calvados uses apples as the base (as pears are allowed too).  This sounds super interesting and I’m ready to jump in.  This is cask #397.

Distillery – Roger Groult

Bottler – Roger Groult

Brand – Roger Groult

Selection – N/A

ABV – 47.3%

Age – 7 Years

Nose – Lot’s of apples, tart cherry, little touch of dark chocolate, sweet bread, there is that sour beer tang in there but it works perfectly with the distillate
Taste – Sweet, red apple, almost more light grape than distinctly apple or cherry, ginger, baked cherry tart, chocolate
Finish – Baked apples, cherry stays tart but brightens up a bit, sour funk comes in and takes over your tongue until the next sip

Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? I think so. Looks like it was around $100 if not less and it’s super interesting

Thoughts: Was thinking about giving this a slightly higher score as it is really tasty, but it’s not super wide in its flavors.  It really hits the apple and cherry and sour notes perfectly that I really enjoy.  If you don’t like sour beer or lambic, you might be put off from this, but to me it strikes a great harmony between that and the calvados.
