Description: Sugarfield Experimental Batch 005
Spirit: Rum
Background: Sugarfield is another Louisiana distillery. They have a special series of experimental batches (they might be exclusive the the distillery). Not sure about earlier batches but this is the 5th that uses sugar cane juice from the “Ascension Parish” and used Lallemand RM yeast. Double distilled in a pot still and bottled at 46%.
Distillery – Sugarfield
Bottler – Sugarfield
Brand – Sugarfield
Selection – N/A
ABV – 46%
Age – Unaged
Nose – Really rich on the nose with mango, papaya, sweet earth, coffee grounds, old banana peel, something almost caramel-y, grass and earth stay behind the fruit sweetness but compliment it well
Taste – Still some fruitiness but it’s slightly more tart, raw sugar, iodine
Finish – Quite tart, cinnamon bark, lemon grass, touch metallic
Score: 4
Would I buy a bottle? No
Thoughts: Have to admit, not having tasted other batches means I can’t really tell what the single parish cane does, but this is somewhat interesting. The nose is quite lovely and almost has a darker, richer quality than some other cane juice spirits while still keeping the grassy characteristic. The complexity narrows in the taste and the bitterness and metallic notes at the end hold it back a little. But I do applaud them for getting nerdy with rum.
