Review #107 – Hammerhead Single Malt 1989

Review #107 – Hammerhead Single Malt 1989

Review #: 107
Description: Hammerhead Czech Republic Single Malt 1989
Spirit: Czech Whiskey

Background: Today’s spirit comes to us from the Czech Republic, though it was distilled when the Soviet Union was still overseeing Eastern Europe and it was Czechoslovakia. Distilled at the Pradlo Distillery and aged for 23 years, this whiskey has seen a lot of history. Not too much else is known about his malt. It likely has coloring and chill filtration but let’s see what whiskey distilled behind the iron curtain tastes like!

Distillery – Pradlo Distillery

Bottler – Pradlo Distillery

Brand – Hammerhead

Selection – N/A

ABV – 40.7%

Age – 23 Years

Nose – Sweet malt, honey, sugared lemon peel, grapefruit
Taste – Some bitter tannins, watery honey
Finish – Muddy oak, tannic, a little bit of lingering heat but it is uninteresting

Score: 4
Would I buy a bottle? No

Thoughts: This one had some promise and the nose was great, but the taste and finish were probably what was to be expected of a 23 year, 40% single malt from a country not really known for its whisky.  Tannic and thin.  I really wanted to love this one as the history of it and story draw you in, but ultimately it fell flat of the lofty expectations I gave it.
