Review #: 117
Description: Rock Hill Farms
Spirit: Bourbon
Background: Rock Hill Farms is a single barrel bourbon from Buffalo Trace utilizing their mashbill #2. Similar to Blanton’s, though this is not coming from a single rickhouse and is bottled at 50% ABV, it is rarely seen on shelves and goes for well past it’s $50 MSRP on the secondary market. So is it worth it?
Distillery – Buffalo Trace
Bottler – Buffalo Trace
Brand – Rock Hill Farms
Selection – N/A
ABV – 50%
Age – NAS
Nose – Ethanol is pretty upfront, minty, tart raspberry, caramel
Taste – Burnt caramel, very thin mouthfeel, there’s a hint of fruit in there but nothing specific jumping out
Finish – Bitter, sour, hot, some spices are there but they are taken over by the heat
Score: 3
Would I buy a bottle? No
Thoughts: Another horsey bourbon but I think this is incredibly inferior to Blanton’s. I got hints of similar notes to the previous review I had done, but the sour, bitterness of this was just gross. I know this is single barrel and maybe just a bad one, but I don’t think $50 retail (or 4x that secondary) is worth the risk if you get this. Even as someone who likes Blanton’s (but don’t pay over retail), nothing from Mashbill #2 that I’ve had lives up to the expectations.
