Review #: 123
Description: Privateer Distiller’s Drawer #74 “Puffery”
Spirit: Rum
Background: Back to the American rum producer Privateer. This offering was aged in used rum casks for 2 years and 11 months after distilled in a copper pot still. This sample was provided blind from a friend so I reviewed it and passed along my notes before being revealed its contents.
Distillery – Privateer
Bottler – Privateer
Brand – Privateer
Selection – N/A
ABV – 56.5%
Age – 2 Years 11 Months
Nose – Caramel, un-ripe banana, cigarette ash?, very strong ethanol, papaya, chocolate
Taste – Vanilla, caramel, molasses, syrup, not super thick mouthfeel though
Finish – Strong burnt sugar, molasses, bitter chocolate, sweet and heat. Short – mid length finish that’s fairly hot
Guess: There were notes in here that reminded me of Havana Club so I’m going to say a molasses, spanish style, maybe 4-5 years, 60-65% abv. The heat was a bit much on this one.
Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? No
Thoughts: Interesting. Definitely makes sense with the heavy rum notes. I like what Privateer is doing, especially with their transparency, but this one just didn’t have anything stand out and the heat was too much.
