Review #125 – Signatory Vintage Bunnahabhain 2009 Cask #900072

Review #: 125
Description: Signatory Vintage Bunnahabhain 2009 Cask #900072
Spirit: Scotch

Background: Following up the 2007 SV Bunna last review, this one also was aged in a sherry butt, but for 2 less years and coming in at a massive 68.5% ABV (definitely the highest alcohol I’ve had in a scotch). Distilled at Bunnahabhain on March 17th, 2009 and bottled on February 11th, 2020 (so just short of 11 years), let’s see what the jump in alcohol does to the flavor. No chillfiltration, dilution, or coloring.

Distillery – Bunnahabhain

Bottler – Signatory Vintage

Brand – Signatory Vintage

Selection – N/A

ABV – 68.5%

Age – 10 Years

Nose – Rich raisins, leather, maple syrup, orange oil, sweet cream, bran flakes, cocoa nibs
Taste – Thick and gooey, maple, cinnamon, stewed cherries, orange creamsicle
Finish – Blast of orange oil and rind, cinnamon red hots, sweet malt, finish is long but turns to mostly just heat

Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? Probably

Thoughts: The 68% on this one definitely raised some eyebrows and I was very interested to see how this would compare to the other SV Bunnas as it had the potential to be special.  The flavors there really are great and intense, but ultimately it was just too hot.  I wanted this to be super special, but ultimately it just ended up being great.  What a shame /s
