Review #209 – New Riff Backsetter Rye

Review #209 – New Riff Backsetter Rye

Review #: 209
Description: New Riff Backsetter Rye
Spirit: Rye

Background: Just like the Bourbon, this rye uses peated backset in the fermentation before being distilled and then aged for 4 years and bottled at 50% without chill filtration.  Using NR 95% rye, 5% malted rye mashbill, let’s see if it’s any better than the bourbon.

Distillery – New Riff

Bottler – New Riff

Brand – New Riff

Selection – N/A

ABV – 50%

Age – 4 Years

Nose – Sweet cherry cough syrup, musty rye, sweet cinnamon powder, cocoa
Taste – Chocolate covered caramel, stewed cherries, over brewed tea
Finish –  Bitter chocolate, metallic and acidic, musty tobacco, the bitterness lingers forever

Score: 3
Would I buy a bottle? No

Thoughts:  Well slightly better than the bourbon, the taste had some more sweetness, but the bitter, acidic taste still was prominent in the finish and would not go away.  Let’s hope they try to figure out how to balance this more, or just experiment in some other way going forward.
